DNS Configuration for TDL

DNS Configuration for TDL

DNS basic:

The domain name system (DNS) is responsible for translating domain names into a specific IP address so the request from browsers can reach to the websites and web applications.

When you host a website or web application (e.g. www.sitewall.net) you need to publish a DNS record.

As a best practice your website should be always published with www entry. This helps in enhancing your SEO scores and cookie management. Many a times the websites are published with the Top level domain (TDL – without www) for easy of usage (e.g https://sitewall.net).

DNS for SiteWALL WAF:

SiteWALL WAF is hosted in multiple datacenters for redundancy and high availability. Hence we provide unique CNAME’s to point your application and websites to our WAF. We manage these CNAME’s using our DNS monitoring for auto failover and redundancy.

CNAME’s are not supported for TDL’s (websites without www, e.g. https://sitewall.net) CNAME’s works perfectly with domain names and sub domains. (e.g https://www.sitewall.net, https://portal.sitewall.net)

Configuring DNS redundancy for TDL’s:

If your website is configured to use TDL’s (website without www e.g. https://sitewall.net) then you will need to have two A records for your TDL for redundancy.

Having two DNS A records ensure that the failover of the traffic occurs seamlessly from one datacenter to another for SiteWALL WAF without any user intervention or interruption. Failing to configure two DNS A records for your website using TDL's may result in outage for your website in case of schedule maintenance or any interruptions in SiteWALL WAF.
